We had a book of old ballad in two volumes, illustrated by Maclise and other draughtsmen. The pictures to ‘Glenfinlas’, the ‘Eve of St John’ and ‘Kempion’ , made me feel uncomfortable. But I think that Marley’s ghost in one of Dicken’s Christmas tales—was it done by Cruikshank?—bit deeper.”
