One was Andersen’s story of the Ugly Duckling...The other was a kind of allegory, called The Story Without An End, translated, I think, by Lucie Duff Gordan from the German.” The mystical, dreamy communion with nature in wild woods and leafy places took my fancy, and begat a mood of Sehnsucht which became habitual.
