Evidence: "Suffice it today that I have devoured the "Woman in White." Anyone of your delicate appreciation & tender sympathies will at once see how hitherto I could have had no time, how now I can have no active power, to write. The process of reading it is so harrowing to the emotions and so fatiguing to the intellectual powers that total prostration ensues."
Context: Woman in White was published serially in the periodical All the Year Round then released in America as a single volume and in England as a three-volume set (called the "Sixth Edition," and likely the version read by Symonds, unless he had followed the serial releases over the course of the previous year, though weekly reading may be inconsistent with Symonds's assertion that he "devoured" the story)
